10 Questions to Ask Wedding Photographers

Your initial feelings me seem a little “EEEEEEK! Wedding Planning!” and they SHOULD be! This is a magical, wonderful, trivial, fantastic, amazing time to be in! You get to surround yourself with your favorite people, FINALLY talk to those wedding vendors of your dreams, and plan the day of your DREAMS!

However, I’m sorry to say, it’s a long and TOUGH process planning a wedding. The payoff in the end is SO worth it! Just remember…. it’s a Marathon, NOT a Sprint! There will be SO many decisions you’ll be making as you plan.. its best to pace yourself, stick with your guns, and remember its YOUR day, no one else’s!

One of the MOST important decisions… and honestly one of the first vendors you should prioritize in your booking: Finding the perfect wedding photographer to capture every smile, tear, and epic dance move. But how do you know if they’re the right fit? Don’t worry, I’ve got your back with 10 Questions to ask your wedding photographer— the scoop on why you need to ask them, and what MY answers would be to them.

Why It Matters: Every photographer sees the world differently, and their style reflects that. Are you into those dreamy, romantic shots with soft lighting? Or do you want something more bold and colorful? Make sure their vibe matches yours!

2. Have You Shot at Our Venue Before?

Why It Matters: Photographers who have worked at your venue already know the best lighting, angles, and secret spots for those magical photos. Even if they haven’t, ask how they’ll prepare. (Spoiler alert: scouting the location is key!)

Whether I’ve been the lead, second shooter, or associate, I’ll let you know. If I haven’t, I won’t pretend otherwise. But I will make every effort to visit your venue before the big day, unless it’s a destination wedding or one requiring an overnight stay (which is common in New England’s six-state region). Even then, I’ll arrive as early as possible the day of or the day before and research the location thoroughly. Exploring new venues is an adventure I love, ensuring beautiful memories for you!

3. What’s Included in Your Packages?

Why It Matters: Before you fall in love with a photographer, make sure you understand exactly what you’re getting. Does the package include an engagement shoot, extra hours, albums, or prints? Clarity upfront avoids any post-wedding surprise costs.

7. How Do You Help Couples Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera?

8. How Long After the Wedding Until We Get Our Photos?

Why It Matters: Some photographers take 4 weeks, others may take 12. Understand the timeline upfront so you’re not left refreshing your email in anticipation for months. Also, ask about sneak peeks for that quick Instagram fix!

Me, Myself, and I: You can expect your wedding photos to be ready within 21 to 40 days after your big day, while engagement session pics are turned around in just 7 to 14 days. I’ll make sure all expectations are crystal clear and spelled out in our contract, so there are no surprises—just amazing photos!

9. What Rights Do We Have to the Photos?

Why It Matters: Not all photographers handle image rights the same way. Will you get full printing rights to your photos, or will the photographer retain them? Make sure you know whether you can share, print, or order albums freely.
